Contribution of Hydrogen Bonds to Paper Strength Properties

Abstract: The objective of this work was to investigate the influence of hydrogen bonds between fibres on static and dynamic strength properties of paper. A commercial bleached pinewood kraft pulp was soaked in water, refined in a PFI, and used to form paper webs in different solvents, such as water, methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and n-butanol, to determine the effect of their dipole moment on static and dynamic strength properties of resulting paper sheets. Paper which was formed in water, being the solvent of the high… Show more

“…Ion logam mempunyai fungsi jembatan gugus OH. Hal tersebut membantu memperkuat ikatan kovalen antara serat selulosa yang memiliki gugus OH - (Altaner et al 2010;Elshemy, 2011;Aji et al, 2014;Pickering et al, 2016;Przybysz et al, 2016). Semakin besar ion logam yang ada, maka ikatan yang terjadi antara serat dan serat semakin bagus.…”

“…Gum gum, a polysaccharides composed of D-mannopyranose and D-galactopyranose, was essayed likewise as a contrast because of its structural similarity with carrageenan and mature industrial application in papermaking[ 13 , 14 ] The results in Fig 1A and 1B show that the tensile and bursting indices of the handsheets increased rapidly with increasing carrageenan dosage. Among the factors contributing to paper strength characteristics, hydrogen bonding was dominant [ 15 ]. In the handsheet drying process, the hydroxyl and sulfate groups of carrageenan formed numerous hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups of cellulose fibres, especially the sulfate groups of carrageenan, which contributed extra hydrogen bonds compared with hydroxyl [ 16 ].…”
