Contribution of G.A. Ilizarov to bone reconstruction: historical achievements and state of the art

Abstract: Methodological solutions of Prof. G.A. Ilizarov are the core stone of the contemporary bone lengthening and reconstruction surgery. They have been acknowledged in the orthopaedic world as one of the greatest contributions to treating bone pathologies. The Ilizarov method of transosseous compression–distraction osteosynthesis has been widely used for managing bone non-union and defects, bone infection, congenital and posttraumatic limb length discrepancies, hand and foot disorders. The optimal conditions for im… Show more

“…Ilizarov started his work in 1951 by treating a patient with a bone defect using a circular frame and transfixation tensioned wires. Then he discovered the biological law of tension stress or distraction histeogenesis and applied this principle to treat a wide variety of conditions such as nonunion, osteomyelitis, dwarfism, congenital deformities, some bone tumours, bone defects, fractures and bone shortening [7]. Recently, hexapodal computer assisted circular frames such as the Taylor Spatial Frame have gained in popularity.…”

“…At present, the demand for the Ilizarov external fixation apparatus and its components for implementation of the technologies of transosseous osteosynthesis for treatment of patients with injuries and orthopedic pathology has been growing [23,24]. Therefore, the goal of our study was to objectify clinical and management risks of using the Ilizarov apparatus.…”
