Contribution of epilithic diatoms to benthic-pelagic coupling in a temperate river

Abstract: Water residence time in the middle course of rivers is often too short to allow substantial phytoplankton development, and primary production is essentially provided by benthic phototrophic biofilms. “…This behaviour has been observed in the epiphytic diatom Cocconeis cf. placentula (Tekwani et al, 2013), related to its association to the macrophytes mass growth (Biggs, 1996). Potamogeton pectinatus, Myriophillum spicatum and Ceratophyllum demersum were highly abundant in the studied section downstream of the reservoirs , and hosted the Cocconeis as an epiphytic form that later drifted into the water column.…”
