Contribution of cellular automata to the understanding of corrosion phenomena

Abstract: We present a stochastic CA modelling approach of corrosion based on spatially separated electrochemical halfreactions, diffusion, acido-basic neutralization in solution and passive properties of the oxide layers. Starting from different initial conditions, a single framework allows one to describe generalised corrosion, localised corrosion, reactive and passive surfaces, including occluded corrosion phenomena as well. Spontaneous spatial separation of anodic and cathodic zones is associated with bare metal and… Show more

“…We consider that it is important to put a focus on an important correlation between microscopic and macroscopic approaches, which can be achieved using CA. A significant contribution of this type of method represents the integration of chemical and electrochemical aspects in the evolution of morphological aspects ( Zenkri, et al, 2017 ). This will also enable to predict the outcome of the corrosion process and link it with in-vitro tests.…”

“…Fortunately, cellular automaton can be used to generate the stochastic samples of pits for subsequently exploring the mechanical behavior of corroded steel wires (Jahns et al 2017;Stafiej et al 2013;Zenkri et al 2017;Lu et al 2016). Guo (2014) used a three-dimensional CA to redefine the complex corrosion rule based on the basic electrochemical corrosion reaction mechanism, and proposed a method to simulate multi-pits corrosion and uniform corrosion simultaneously.…”

“…An overview of CA modeling of the corrosion processes can be found in. [15,16] In the present work, we use a three-dimensional corrosion model with spatially separate anodic and cathodic reactions and accounting of acidic-basic species in solution. [17][18][19] A new feature is introduced by accounting for the cathodic reaction taking place with DO.…”
