Contribution of BlaA and BlaB β-Lactamases to Antibiotic Susceptibility of Yersinia enterocolitica Biovar 1B

Abstract: Highly pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica biovar 1B produces two distinct ␤-lactamases, BlaA and BlaB. Mutants of a representative biovar 1B isolate were constructed and evaluated to determine the extent of limitation of susceptibility to broad-spectrum ␤-lactam antibiotics by BlaA and BlaB. The results demonstrated that BlaA, a class A enzyme, plays a significant role in limiting susceptibility to penicillins and cephalosporins. The contribution of BlaB, a class C enzyme, was less profound and was limited pri… Show more

“…Yersinia enterocolitica , a member of Enterobacteriaceae , is a zoonotic pathogen widely distributed in nature (Wang et al, 2011 ; Liang et al, 2012 ). Most Y. enterocolitica exhibits intrinsic resistance to β-lactm antibiotics by the production of chromosomally encoded β-lactamases called BlaA (a class A enzyme showing constitutive expression) and BlaB (an inducible AmpC-type β-lactamase), respectively (Cornelis and Abraham, 1975 ; Bent and Young, 2010 ).…”

“…Most Y. enterocolitica strains produce two kinds of chromosomal β-lactamases, BlaA (a non-inducible broad-spectrum carbenicillinase) and BlaB (an AmpC-type inducible group I class C cephalosporinase; Cornelis and Abraham, 1975 ). A recent study shows in 1B/O:8 strain 8081, the expression of BlaA is constitutive whereas the AmpC (BlaB) was inducible (Bent and Young, 2010 ). Meanwhile, the two β-lactamases are not expressed simultaneously in all strains because strains with different biotypes tend to display specific resistance phenotypes (Stock et al, 2000 ).…”

“…enterocolitica 8081 encodes two β-lactamases located at different positions on the bacterial chromosome. These are denoted as blaA (YE2019) and blaB (YE2440) the former of which expresses resistance to penicillins and cephalosporins [44]. Y.…”
