Abstract:The immunoglobulin isotype IgE is commonly associated with allergy. However, its involvement in autoimmune disease in general, and Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in particular, is still not completely clarified, nonetheless IgE has been observed in patients with T1D. In this article, we aimed to elucidate the contribution of IgE in the pathogenesis of the disease in a spontaneous model for T1D, i.e. the NOD mouse. We observed increased levels of IgE in splenic, lymph node and peripheral blood B cells in the NOD mice co… Show more
“…Ectopic lymphoid structures also were reported from target organs of other autoimmune diseases, for example, in the brains of patients with multiple sclerosis 38,40 or in pancreatic islets of mouse diabetes models. 41,42 The infiltrates can just form diffuse lymphocyte aggregates or highly organized and sophisticated structures. 38 The presence of ectopic lymphoid structures correlated with a poor outcome in autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, 43 but with a milder disease course in experimental uveitis in mice.…”

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
