Contribution of amenable mortality to life expectancy differences between the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curaçao and the Netherlands

Abstract: Objective. To identify specific health care areas whose optimization could improve population health in the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curaçao. Methods. Comparative observational study using mortality and population data of the Dutch Caribbean islands and the Netherlands. Mortality trends were calculated, then analyzed with Joinpoint software, for the period 1988–2014. Life expectancies were computed using abridged life tables for the most recent available data of all territories (2005–2007). Life ex… Show more

“…In this context, Jarčuška et al ( 21 ) found a strong negative relationship between treatable mortality and life expectancy at birth in the European Union. The findings of Verstraeten et al ( 30 ) also indicated that reductions in treatable mortality may lead to gains in life expectancy. This can translate into longer working lives for individuals and higher productivity for countries, resulting in economic benefits.…”

Overall, the information about healthcare in the Dutch Caribbean suggests that the excess amenable mortality in perinatal deaths in the Dutch Caribbean, at least in part, reflects differences in the effectiveness of healthcare in the Dutch Caribbean and the Netherlands [69].…”
