Contribution à l’évaluation de l’impact sur les écosystèmes aquatiques de la valorisation en BTP de mâchefers d’incinération d’ordures ménagères (MIOM)

Abstract

Our project takes place in a sustainable development programme on the utilization of Thermic Process Residues in civil engineering concrete. The aim of this project is to assess the effect on the aquatic environment of the use of MSWI bottom ash in road base material scenario. To assess the risk for the ecosystems sumitted to MSWI bottom ash leachates, we have chosen to work with unicellular algae. Microalgae play an important role in the equilibrium of aquatic ecosystem, being the first level of the trophic chain to produce organic matter and oxygen. Our bioassays are specific to a metabolic way. They allow the detection of early disturbance in organisms, which can generate more important disturbances. We test the enzymatic alkaline phosphatase activitiy (APA) of Chlorella vulgaris. In the same way, we achieved some normalized algal growth tests which concern the global metabolism of algae. We have tested MSWI bottom ash leachates from standart collection and from selective collection. The results showed an alkaline phosphatase decrease and an algal growth inhibition. APA displayed the presence of heavy metals in leachates. Some experiments conducted in the laboratory showed that APA of Chlorella vulgaris is disturbed by the presence of heavy metals. These tests showed that APA decrease is more important in case of standard collection than in case of selective collection. This project will contribute to define Thermic Process Residues enhancement conditions. Development of significant bioassays will contribute to develop whole-cell biosensors, which can allow the continuous biomonitoring of MSWI bottom ash leachates. They will allow identification and orientation of physico-chimic and ecotoxicologic analysis, to realise urgency. Dans le cadre d’un programme de recherche portant sur la faisabilité de la valorisation de résidus de procédés thermiques en BTP, nous avons étudié l’impact sur les milieux aquatiques de l’utilisation de MIOM en sous couches routières. Pour cela, nous avons choisi de travailler sur des algues unicellulaires, maillon de base des chaînes trophiques. Nous avons testé des lixiviats de mâchefers issus de collecte traditionnelle et issus de collecte sélective, chacun des deux étant étudié « frais » ou après carbonatation artificielle. Lorsque les mâchefers sont testés frais, qu’ils proviennent d’une collecte traditionnelle ou sélective, nous avons constaté une inhibition de la croissance algale et de l’activité enzymatique phosphatase alcaline (APA) de Chlorella vulgaris. La perturbation de cette activité enzymatique peut être corrélée à la présence de métaux lourds dans les lixiviats. Lorsque les mâchefers sont testés après carbonatation artificielle, on observe un abattement significatif de leur toxicité potentielle vis à vis des algues. D’autre part le développement du bio-essai basé sur la mesure de l’APA va permettre de mettre au point un biocapteur à cellules entières à fibre optique pour la surveillance en continu et in situ du relargage éventuel de polluants par ce type de matériaux. Nous pourrons ainsi suivre la cinétique de relargage de polluants métalliques au cours du temps lors du phénomène de maturation.
