Abstract

Nowadays some measuring system has been developed in order to measure directly electrical activity in tall objects likes power distribution lines, in this case, the obtained results are employed in the design of the protection systems. In the case of lightning rod installation in buildings, there are not so many collected data since there is very poor monitoring of the real time behaviour of lightning. Besides, the protection model applied for lightning rod installation is still mainly based on theoretical models data which are been revised nowadays. Moreover, the statistical data about lightning characteristics have been registered in some few points where equipment has been installed (mostly in tall structures, mountains, etc..) which may not be representative of the wide variety of different types of installations and emplacements. This paper describes the design and acquisition strategy followed to obtain an autonomous measurement micro station developed to measure some lightning parameters in a wide mesh of real lightning rods installations. Micro stations are small acquisition systems allowing measurement of electric activity in the lightning rod and electric field recording in the previous moments of the lightning stroke and some milliseconds after. The main utility of this system is the possibility to create a distributed network of sensors in several installations around a large area. Instead of triggering lightning or choosing points with high number of lightning impacts, the use of several measurement points should provide an acceptable amount of data in real installations correlated to the nature of emplacement.
