Contrasted hydrological systems of the Peruvian Amazon induce differences in growth patterns of the silver arowana, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum

Abstract: -In Amazonian fisheries, the silver arowana, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum (Cuvier 1829) is heavily exploited for human consumption as an adult, and for the aquarium trade as a small juvenile (yolk sac juvenile mainly). The periodicity of annuli formation on otoliths and growth variability of the silver arowana were studied in different river river-basins of the Peruvian Amazon between 2006 and 2009. Transverse stained sections of 606 individual otoliths were analysed from four different river-basins, the Amazonas,… Show more

“…Important length and even more important body mass differences were observed between the four sub‐basins, as already noted while studying age and growth patterns of these same populations (Duponchelle et al., ). After reaching sexual maturity, fishes in the Amazonas become progressively heavier than those from the Ucayali, Napo and Putumayo, in order of increasing difference.…”

“…Age at first sexual maturity ( A m ) was calculated from the von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) as follows: Am=false(ln(1false(Lmfalse/Lfalse))false/Kfalse)+t0,where L m is the size at first sexual maturity previously calculated and t , L ∞ , K and t 0 the parameters of the VBGF obtained from Duponchelle et al. () on the same samples.…”
