Contrast Enhanced Sonography of Focal Splenic Lesions with a Second-Generation Contrast Agent

Abstract: Contrast-enhanced sonography is of diagnostic value in subgroups of patients with (peri-)splenic lesions (48%): including splenic infarction, splenic rupture, splenic haemangioma/splenoma, and accessory spleen.

“…On CES splenic infarction as well as rupture is characterized by an unenhanced pattern.. Splenic lymphoma and metastases to the spleen usually demonstrates a reduced enhancement by CES in comparison to the surrounding splenic tissue enhancement as an in vivo reference [16]. Because of uncharacteristic imaging patterns clinical data and follow-up are important additives for definitive diagnosis [16]. Usually histologic confirmation is not necessary in these patients.…”

“…Areas of absent vascularization like hematomas, abscesses (Fig. 11), and infarcts are appropriate for CES investigation [14,16]. It makes a great visual impact to identify infarced areas by using CES.…”
