“…Single-detector row helical CT demonstrates the collateral vessels very accurately. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is probably as accurate as CT but is more expensive and less accessible; in addition, some of the rarest pathways (eg, pleuropericardial or thoracic wall varices) may be missed at MR imaging (6). An important advantage of multi-detector row CT over single-detector row helical CT is the increased speed of scanning, which permits routine use of very thin collimation for imaging the portosystemic collateral vessels (2).…”

“…This phenomenon has been known since the early studies on abdominal MRA [9] and affected as many as 16% of patients undergoing conventional MRA in a recent study [7]. Blurring artefacts in proximal visceral arteries are caused by small movements of the diaphragm during breathholding [26], by motion triggered through cardiac contraction and pulsatile oscillations of the aorta and its branches [27,28], as well as by motion as a result of intestinal peristalsis [29]. Motion-induced artefacts during breathholding are also reported for renal arteries [30], and fast MRA has been shown in a recent study to improve image quality of the distal segments of the renal arteries in particular [17].…”

“…Grieshop et al [12] reported an 80% incidence of elevated white cell count in cases of MVT. Once the diagnosis is suspected, it may be confirmed using contrast computed tomography (CT) [6] or magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) [13]. Recently, Ha et al [14] reported that CT and MRA gave the most sensitive results in non-pregnant patients with suspected MVT.…”
