Contralateral ureteral metastasis 4 years after radical nephrectomy

Abstract: Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma to the contralateral ureter is rare. Early recognition is extremely important in protecting the remaining renal function and prolonging life-expectancy for post-nephrectomy patients. Complete metastectomy suitable anastomosis have been shown to improve survival.

“…Another study also showed that there was no substantial difference in cell type and structural composition between primary and metastatic renal carcinomas. 25 Contralateral metastasis frequently occurs in ccRCC, 4,25 which is consistent with our case. Whether there is a tendency for contralateral metastasis in ccRCC still needs to be determined in larger future studies.…”

“…Currently, there have been 51 reported cases of metastatic RCC to the ureter; with only 9 reported cases to the contralateral ureter 5 , 6 that we are aware of. Reconstructive options for metachronous metastasis to the contralateral ureter should be determined based on the length of the defect, bladder capacity, and location of the defect.…”

“…Therefore, we were able to perform a partial ureterectomy and end-to-end anastomosis with good functional outcomes. Other surgical techniques such as ileal ureteral substitution or Boary-plasty could be considered depending on the localization and size of the lesion and bladder capacity [ 5 , 6 , 8 ].…”
