Contralateral Acupuncture for the Treatment of Phantom Limb Pain and Phantom Limb Sensation in Oncologic Lower Limb Amputee: A Case Report

Abstract: Phantom limb pain (PLP) and phantom limb sensation (PLS) are common and distressing sequelae of amputation. Current pain management following amputation is challenging and unsatisfying. In this case study, a 74-year-old woman underwent above-knee amputation because of the rhabdomyosarcoma in the right leg. Despite several analgesics, pain was poorly controlled. The phantom limb pain and sensation were immediately reduced by the contralateral acupuncture, and abolished after the third session with no side-effec… Show more

“…The skeleton is mostly symmetrical across the mid-sagittal plane, but internal organs and their fascia are not necessarily so. (3) Needles are often inserted into a distant site further away from the chief area of complaint (75,76), or sometimes in the contralateral side (77). This is a guiding principle in TBN.…”

“…In lateral epicondylitis, points in the wrist and the elbow are needled, including in the anterior surface of the upper limb (82). In "neuropathic/neuroplastic" limb pain, needles are inserted into the contralateral limb to relieve pain (77). In tension-type headache, adjacent points can be used, bilaterally, including the adjacent large myofascial tissue of the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid (83).…”

“…Such cases may require opposing acupuncture, also known as healthy-side acupuncture or contralateral acupuncture, which is one of the nine acupuncture methods recorded in the classic Chinese medicine textbook Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Canon of Internal Medicine). Contralateral acupuncture is applied to the opposite side to the painful area [15][16][17][18] . However, the literature on direct comparisons of the effect of different acupuncture methods on DOMS is limited.…”
