Matlab Simulink is one of the major modeling and simulation tools applied in different embedded systems domain. Quality assurance is an essential, but often highly effort-consuming part of software development. A lot of different quality assurance techniques exist to ensure high quality, but these analysis and testing techniques are often applied in isolation. Therefore, we are interested in synergy effects when applying them in combination. Consequently, we performed a systematic mapping study to identify the current state of the art regarding such quality assurance techniques and existing combinations. Our main result is a classification of existing quality assurance techniques applied on Matlab Simulink models, and an overview of existing tool support and the validity of the approaches.

In automotive industry, more and more complex electronics and software systems are being developed to enable the innovation and to decrease costs. Besides the complex multimedia, comfort, and safety systems of conventional vehicles, automotive companies are required to develop more and more complex engine, aftertreatment, and energy management systems for their (hybrid) electric vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions. MATLAB/Simulink is one of the most popular graphical modeling languages and a simulation tool for validating and testing control software systems. Due to the increasing complexity and size of Simulink models of automotive software systems, it has become a necessity to maintain the Simulink models.In this paper, we defined metrics for assessing the modularity of Simulink models. A Java tool developed to measure the defined metrics on Simulink models interfaces with a visualization tool to facilitate the maintenance tasks of the Simulink models. The modularity metrics is furthermore validated in two phases. In the first phase, the modularity measurement is validated against the experts evaluation of a system. In the second phase, we studied the relationship between metric values and number of faults. We have observed that high coupling metric values frequently correspond to number of faults. Modularity metrics will be extended to architectural quality metrics for automotive systems.

Abstract. The distributed design process for safety-critical embedded systems has become an increasingly difficult challenge: Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in vehicles, for instance, participate in many vehicle functions, while each vehicle function, in turn, is spread across several ECUs. Many suppliers participate in systems design and many partial functions are reused from past projects, not always knowing the assumptions at the time of their development. In particular, efficient allocation of safety mechanisms and a sound safety case are difficult tasks for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Contractbased development has gained popularity as an approach for supporting distributed development by explicitly annotating assumptions and guarantees to components, but an integrated process covering specification of nominal behavior and safety has not been described so far. We present such an integrated development approach that encompasses the systematic breakdown of nominal system behavior using contracts, the consistent derivation of safety analysis by interpreting several types of contract violations as a specification for failure modes, and the subsequent integration of safety mechanisms that cover these failure modes through safety contracts. The approach equally fits hardware and software and is therefore applicable on the system level. We demonstrate it by an electric drive example. The extensibility of our approach towards Cyber Physical Systems, which compose themselves at runtime, is briefly outlined at the end of the article.
