Contraception use and pregnancy among 15–24 year old South African women: a nationally representative cross-sectional survey

Abstract: Background: Adolescent reproductive health has not continued to receive the attention it deserves since the start of the HIV epidemic. In South Africa, high numbers of adolescent women report pregnancies that are unwanted and yet few have accessed available termination of pregnancy services. Enabling contraception use is vital for meeting the goals of HIV prevention.

A Nigerian study conducted among undergraduate students found that 54% were sexually active (Omoteso 2006).…”

“…Condoms, pills (Combined Oral Contraceptives) and injectables occupy the first three positions in the contraceptive use prevalence among young women in most of the African countries including Namibia [28][29][30][31]. The commonest method of contraception used among these students was condom in our findings; this is in agreement with the studies conducted among female students of higher institution in Nigeria and Lesotho by Abiodun and Balogun and, Akintade et al respectively.…”

“…2 However, despite the availability of free reproductive health services, few women are utilising family planning services in SA. 3 Recent studies have reported that unsafe abortions are on the increase. [4][5][6] We wished to determine the number of terminations of pregnancy (TOPs) requested and the number of TOPs performed from January 2008 to December 2009 in the Johannesburg Metropolitan District (JM).…”
