Background Teenage pregnancy is a global issue raising concerns for all who are interested in the health and well-being of young women and their children. It carries major health and social issues with unique medical and psychosocial consequences for both adolescents and society in general. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence and factors associated with teenage pregnancy in eastern Ethiopia. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Multi-stage simple random sampling procedure was used to select 2258 female teenagers. Interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were entered into EpiData and analyzed using stata software. The Poisson regression model with robust variance estimation was used to examine the association of the independent variable with teenage pregnancy. An adjusted prevalence ratio (APR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was reported. Results The prevalence of teenage pregnancy was 30.2% (95% CI: 28.3, 32.1). Age 16–17 years old (APR=7.05; 95% CI: 4.15,11.96), 17–18 years old (APR=9.85; 95% CI: 5.72,16.98), not being in school (APR=2.83; 95% CI: 1.93,4.16), lack of formal education (APR=1.11; 95% CI: 1.03,1.19), being married (APR=3.59; 95% CI: 2.83,4.56), parental divorce (APR=1.24; 95% CI: 1.08,1.42), having elder sister who had a history of teenage pregnancy (APR=1.11; 95% CI: 1.02,1.21), and not knowing fertile period in menstrual cycle (APR=1.31; 95% CI: 1.16,1.47) were independently associated with teenage pregnancy. Conclusion One in three teenagers had been pregnant. Age, not being in school, lack of formal education, being married, parental divorce, having an elder sister who had a history of teenage pregnancy, and not knowing fertile period during the menstrual cycles were the factors associated with teenage pregnancy. In Ethiopia, further efforts are required in the prevention of teenage pregnancy, keeping girls in school and strengthening the policy of delaying child marriage, particularly in rural areas.

Introduction Contraception is the most favourable method of family planning. Prevention of unwanted pregnancy has great significance, both as a measure of health preservation and as a wider preventive and social measure. Objective to evaluate how informed the adolescents are when it comes to contraception, as well as to evaluate their personal experiences. Methods the research was conducted in the form of a cross-sectional study. The research instrument was a questionnaire the adolescents were asked to fill, which contained questions constructed to assess how well they were informed about the importance of contraception as well as their personal experiences. The study included 120 students and the sample was intentional, as the study was conducted at the Faculty of Health and Business Studies in Valjevo, Singidunum University in April-May 2019. The participation in the study was voluntary and anonymous, and the research was approved by the authorities of the institution. Results the results were analysed using descriptive statistical methods. The respondents were between 19 and 23 years of age and predominantly female (83%), while only 17% were male. The majority of the respondents were well informed on the subject of mechanical contraception methods and the use of condoms. The condom was the most commonly used method of contraception during sexual intercourse (63%). A large number of respondents (40%) believed that adolescents could do with more information on the subject. Conclusion the research results indicate that there is a need for more education on the subject of the importance and methods of contraception. It is necessary to intensify health education in cooperation with health institutions, schools, higher education institutions and the entire community. This need is felt by the adolescents themselves, who believe that their peers do not know enough about contraception.

Métodos contraceptivos ou anticoncepcionais são todos os recursos utilizados por homens e mulheres para evitar gravidez e doenças sexualmente transmissíveis. Um dos principais métodos contraceptivos de difusão mundial são os contraceptivos hormonais orais, conhecidos como pílulas anticoncepcionais, estes têm sido amplamente utilizados pela população feminina. Além da ação contraceptiva, essa classe de medicamentos apresenta outras finalidades terapêuticas como, tratamento de cistos ovarianos, tratamento do câncer ovariano e endometrial, entre outros. Com base nisso pretendeu-se então conhecer o perfil de comportamento dos adolescentes acerca do tema e avaliar o nível de conhecimento sobre métodos contraceptivos. Como instrumento de pesquisa foi aplicado um questionário no formato eletrônico abordando questões acerca dos métodos contraceptivos, com alunos do ensino médio de rede pública com idade entre 14 e 19 anos. Os resultados do trabalho contaram com a participação de 127 estudantes, dentro desse grupo 96 (75,6%) pessoas eram do sexo feminino e 31(24,4%) do sexo masculino, ainda foi evidenciado que 55 (43,3%) dos adolescentes não tem orientação no ambiente familiar sobre educação e orientação sexual, além de que 48 (37,8%) dos entrevistados afirmam não conhecer os riscos das possíveis interações medicamentosas, enquanto 46 (36,2%) acreditam que não possam desencadear doenças. Conclui-se que os adolescentes possuem algumas informações sobre os métodos contraceptivos, porém, superficiais, ficando explícito a necessidade de aprimorar à divulgação de conhecimento a respeito da saúde sexual.
