Continuum mechanics with torsion

Abstract: This paper is an attempt to introduce methods and concepts of the Riemann-Cartan geometry largely used in such physical theories as general relativity, gauge theories, solid dynamics, etc. to fluid dynamics in general and to studying and modeling turbulence in particular. Thus, in order to account for the rotational degrees of freedom of the irregular dynamics of small scale vortexes, we further generalize our unified first-order hyperbolic formulation of continuum fluid and solid mechanics which treats the fl… Show more

“…SHTC systems go also beyond classical continuum mechanics, see e.g. [94] for an SHTC formulation of continuum mechanics with torsion. Despite the mathematical beauty and rigor of the SHTC framework, up to now it was never carried over to the discrete level.…”

“…∂ k B k = 0. The divergence constraint on the Burgers vector is explicitly contained in (16) in order to achieve a Galilean invariant formulation, see also [46,62,37,57]. Therefore, the GLM approach for a general, non-trivial curl of J k reads as follows:…”

“…Finally, we note that, as discussed in detail in [27,29], the developed approach is geometrical in nature, in which the matter is considered as a non-Riemannian manifold in which the geometry is determined by the distortion field A a µ (non-holonomic frame field), which replaces the holonomic tetrad ξ a µ and plays the role of moving Cartan frames. In such a geometrical framework, the 4-velocity u µ and the rest mass current j µ := √ −gρu µ are collinear by construction [27].…”
