Continuous-wave operation and tuning characteristics of Nd:LuAlO3 at 1083 nm for 3He and 4He optical pumping

Abstract: cw laser operation has been achieved from a diode-pumped Nd:LuAlO3 crystal for the first time. The tuning characteristics centered about 1083 nm are presented and the laser’s use for 3He and 4He optical pumping are established. With 1.5 W of output at 1083 nm and a slope efficiency greater than 22%, this crystal represents the first viable alternative to Nd:LMA.

“…It can be clearly seen that there are various attainable emission peaks in the range of 1040-1115 nm. Especially, the transition lines at 1073, 1080, and 1084 nm have proved to be helpful for optical pumping of superfluid helium and related scientific studies such as atomic and molecular spectroscopy [12][13][14][15][16]. Therefore, it is practically valuable to develop a compact light source at these spectral lines with the Nd:YAP crystal.…”

“…The laser optical pumping of helium has been confirmed to be a critical process for helium magnetometers [1][2][3]. Several candidate materials have been proposed for generating 1083 nm lasers, including solid-state lasers based on Nd-doped laser crystals [4][5][6] and distributed-feedback diode lasers [7,8]. In the Nd-doped laser crystals, Nd:LiNbO 3 crystal has proved to be an excellent gain medium because of its broad fluorescence band near 1083 nm.…”
