“…T h e explanation for these findings may be that both C M V and LAP activity are hormonal dependent. Estrogen causes an increase in LAP activity and a decrease in C M V (3,13), while progesterone inhibits the LAP response to estrogen and increases C M V (10,13). An increase in LAP activity was observed 24 hours after estrogen administration and reached a peak 72 hours later (13).…”

“…However, human clinical experi ence confi rms that low doses of progestagen change the consistency of cer vical mucus, making it hard for the spermatozoa to penetrate, while possibly at the same time inhibiting the transport of such spermatozoa as arrive in the uterus. The progestagen may be given by injection (34,35) or orally (36). Menstruation occurs naturally and side effects appear to be minimal.…”

“…The idea of contraception without inhibition of ovulation was introduced in 1965 by Rudel, Martinez-Manautou & Maqueo-Topete. Their studies led to the development of a contraceptive regimen based on continuous administration of synthetic progestogens, in low dosage without added oestrogen (Martinez-Manautou, Cortez, Giner, Aznar, Casasola & Rudel, 1966; Martinez-Manautou, Giner-Velasquez, Cortez-Gallegos, Aznar, Rojas, Guittenez-Najar & Rudel, 1967a; Martinez-Manautou, Giner-Velasquez & Rudel, 1967b). Many successful trials of this regimen using various progestogens including megestrol acetate have now been reported by other groups of workers (Mason, Cox, Mason & Grant, 1967;Macdonald, Lumley, Coulson & Stitch, 1968;Foss, Svendsen, Fotherby & Richards, 1968; Zanartu, Rodriguez, Pupkin, Salas & Guerrero, 1968b;Howard, Elstein, Blair & Morris, 1969;Mears, Vessey, Andolsek & Oven, 1969;Cox, 1969).…”
