Introduction: Oromucosal films, comprising mucoadhesive buccal films (MBFs) and orodispersible films (ODFs), are considered patient-centric dosage forms. Target groups are patients with special needs. Various active pharmaceutical ingredients have been shown to be suitable for oromucosal film production. A shift is seen in the production techniques, from conventional solvent casting to printing techniques. Areas covered: In this review, the patient acceptability of oromucosal films is discussed. An overview is given of the small molecule drugs, biopharmaceuticals and herbal extracts that have been incorporated so far. Finally, the current state of 2D and 3D printing techniques for production purposes is discussed. Expert opinion: The patient-centric features are important for the further development and acceptance of this oral solid dosage form. Oromucosal films perfectly fit in the current attention for personalized medicine. Both MBFs and ODFs are intended for either a local or a systemic effect. For buccal absorption, sufficient mucoadhesion is one of the most important criteria an oromucosal film must comply with. For the preparation, the solvent casting technique is still predominately used. Some limitations of this production method can be tackled by printing techniques. However, these novel techniques introduce new requirements, yet to be set, for oromucosal film preparation.

Printing technologies in pharmaceutical compounding as a new perspective for hospital pharmacy • The possibility of preparing drugs based on two-and three-dimensional printing technologies have recently been explored in the pharmaceutical field. Possibility of implementation of printing techniques in the preparation of compounded drugs, especially in a hospital pharmacy, was the object of this review. Printing technologies allow production of complex drug products in a single process. Therefore, this technology can become an innovative method preparation of compounded drugs adapted to patients with special therapeutic needs.

Inkjet printing (IJP) is an additive manufacturing process that selectively deposits ink materials, layer‐by‐layer, to create three‐dimensional (3D) objects or two‐dimensional (2D) patterns with precise control over their structure and composition. This technology has emerged as an attractive and versatile approach to address the ever‐evolving demands of personalized medicine in the healthcare industry. Although originally developed for non‐healthcare applications, IJP harnesses the potential of pharma‐inks, which are meticulously formulated inks containing drugs and pharmaceutical excipients. Delving into the formulation and components of pharma‐inks, the key to precise and adaptable material deposition enabled by IJP is unraveled. The review extends its focus to substrate materials, including paper, films, foams, lenses, and 3D‐printed materials, showcasing their diverse advantages, whilst exploring a wide spectrum of therapeutic applications. Additionally, the potential benefits of hardware and software improvements, along with artificial intelligence integration, are discussed to enhance IJP's precision and efficiency. Embracing these advancements, IJP holds immense potential to reshape traditional medicine manufacturing processes, ushering in the era of medical precision. However, further exploration and optimization are needed to fully utilize IJP's healthcare capabilities.
