Continuous flow synthesis of poly(acrylic acid) via free radical polymerisation

Abstract: The free radical polymerisation of aqueous solutions of acrylic acid (1) has been studied using a continuous flow reactor to quickly screen reaction parameters such as temperature, residence time, monomer- and initiator concentration.

“…An and co-workers took the enzymatic cascade system in which GOx was replaced with pyranose oxide (P2Ox, a homotetrameric flavoprotein found in root fungi) due to its higher enzymatic efficiency to synthesize hydrophilic multiblock and ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polymers via the RAFT process in reaction vessels exposed to air (Scheme 5). [29] They successfully synthesized sequentially controlled multiblock copolymers up to 10 blocks with M n ,100 kDa, and also formed controlled UHMW polymers with M n ,2.3 million Da (MDa) with near-quantitative monomer conversion and low values (, 1.5 for the copolymers and , 1.4 for the UHMW homopolymers). RAFT Polymerization Initiated by Fenton Chemistry…”

“…Free radical polymerization (FRP) has been widely used to synthesize different types of hydrophilic and hydrophobic synthetic polymers in aqueous and organic media . The mechanism of consists of three fundamental steps: i) Initiation , that is, the formation of an active radical followed by its addition to a vinyl monomer; ii) Propagation , that is, the rapid and progressive subsequent addition of monomer molecules to the growing polymer chain; and iii) Termination , that is, the destruction of the active radical species, usually via bimolecular combination or disproportionation .…”

“…In fact, RAFT CTAs aid in achieving control of the radical polymerization via reversible addition of the thiocarbonylthio group and rapid fragmentation reactions . Therefore, relatively analogous activation/initiation systems such as thermal, photo, enzyme, and redox based radical formation can be employed to initiate both FRP and RAFT processes. Despite the huge advances made in this field, new techniques that can overcome some of the drawbacks of these systems are continuously sought.…”
