Continuous Commutation Failure Suppression Method Based on Self-adaptive Auto-disturbance Rejection Proportional-integral Controller for HVDC Transmission System

Abstract: Once an asymmetrical fault occurs on the AC side of the receiving-end of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, the current reference will be affected by the control regulation on the DC inverter side and the commutation voltage asymmetry. In this case, the advance firing angle will fluctuate periodically, causing security threats to the system. If the fault cannot be cleared in time, the effect may be even more serious. However, the traditional proportional-integral (PI) controller cannot e… Show more

“…As for suppression measures of CF, recently, there been a number of solutions to mitigate CF caused by inverter AC faults [7], which can be classified into two types, (i) advancing firing instants represented by CFPREV [8] and (ii) decreasing the DC current order represented by VDCOL [11]. To further improve the performance, many studies were carried out by optimizing the parameters and adding auxiliary links [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. However, they were always activated by the drop of inverter AC voltage rather rectifier voltage [16].…”

“…In this period, the extinction angle γ min is supposed to lift up, however it drops down continuously because of the surge of DC current. Consequently, the drop of extinction angle and firing angle will lead to the excessive consumption of inverter reactive power according to formula ( 13) and (14).…”

“…The ADRC has been widely used because of its simple theory, excellent robustness, insufficient demand for a controlled object model and other advantages. Wu et al 9 designed a new electro-hydraulic ostrich machine based on ADRC, which effectively improves the damping effect of the start stop transient structure, and has good stability and tracking performance under external interference. To improve the accuracy of mobile robot trajectory tracking when disturbed by external factors, Wang et al 10 designed a trajectory tracking control method based on ADRC.…”

“…L INE commutated convert based high-voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) is widely used in power grid due to the growing demand of long-distance bulk power transmission [1], [2]. LCC-HVDC is superior to voltage-source converter based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) in transmission capacity, power losses, and investment benefits for long-distance bulk power transmission [3].…”
