Continuing the New Jersey Mid-Atlantic Sea-Level Transect

Abstract: Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 174A drilled a total of 12 holes at three sites on the New Jersey shelf and slope, recovering almost 1 km of core ranging in age from late Eocene through the Pleistocene. Determining the timing, amplitudes, and causal mechanisms of sea-level variations, as well as their relation to the resulting stratigraphic record, continues to be a fundamental goal of ODP. The major goal of Leg 174A was to investigate the OligoceneHolocene history of sea-level change as part of a transect of… Show more

“…Much has been learned in the past 30 years as a result of scientific ocean drilling about the sedimentary response to eustasy and the role of eustatic fluctuations in the formation of seismic sequences (Miller et al, 1994;Mountain et al, 1994;Austin et al, 1998;Miller et al, 1998;Mountain et al, 2010;Fulthorpe et al, 2011). Our results expand on these findings.…”

“…In the Canterbury Basin, the Site U1352 location was chosen because it lacked evidence of channel-canyon incision and pelagic fossils are more abundant than beneath the shelf, providing better age control (Fulthorpe et al, 2011). New Jersey Site 1073 was selected because seismic data showed an especially thick and relatively complete sedimentary section, distal from submarine canyon drainage, in addition to the possibility of obtaining good age control (Austin et al, 1998). As a result of interactions between accommodation space and sediment supply, upper slopes on passive margins can be depositional, erosional, or undergo sediment bypass (Galloway, 1998).…”

“…The structural substrate of the PAP can be considered to be comparable to the New Jersey continental shelf in the USA in a morphological sense, but with subtle differences as the New Jersey shelf was ice-rafted at the time of the LGM (Duncan, 2000) which gives it a bias towards younger strata (e.g. Emery and Uchupi, 1984;Austin et al, 1998). The PAP therefore provides a unique opportunity to correlate depositional events to palaeoenvironments of relevance to the Pleistocene.…”

“…Although drilling originally targeted shelf locations where seismic facies are best imaged (Miller and Mountain, 1994), safety considerations required initial drilling on the slope (ODP Leg 150; Mountain et al, 1994) and onshore (ODP Leg 150X;Miller et al, , 1996a. In 1997, drilling edged onto the outer continental shelf (ODP Leg 174A; Austin et al, 1998), targeting Late Neogene clinoforms (see Metzger et al, 2000).…”
