Introduction: The dentist must be aware of this drug use in their individual patients to: (1) avoid possible contraindications during dental treatment, (2) be aware of the many oral and craniofacial manifestations of such drug use, (3) be able to provide necessary dental treatment to combat the dental/oral ravages of drug use, and (4) be able to refer such patients, if so desired by the patient. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study is (1) To determine the knowledge of abusive drugs among dentists and (2) To determine the attitude and role of dentists in identifying patients with abusive drugs. Subjects and Methods: A modified 27-item questionnaire was formulated and distributed among the study. The participants were to return the filled questionnaire to the investigators within a week. A total of 203 validated entries were collected. Data were entered into Microsoft Excel 2007 and analyzed in SPSS V20. Associations between categorical variables were determined using Chi-square or Fisher's exact test. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Irrespective of the educational qualification drugs are perceived harmful with definite oral manifestations, and dentists should be concerned with identifying individuals with drugs. It is believed that trying drugs once could lead to possible addiction and that dental practitioners should have their skills developed to handle cases and referred to deaddiction centers with modification of treatment plans. Conclusions: Educating dental graduates and postgraduates about the oral implications of drugs intake and making it a part of the dental curriculum may help us dealing with the global issues of drugs. Even making dental students a part in counseling and part of the behavioral therapies advocated in treating drug addicts.

The dental visits are a potentially valuable opportunity for screening patients with substance misuse and potentially assisting. However, it is not clear if there is a systematic approach in training general dental practitioners to gain competencies for screening and referral in such cases. We surveyed dental interns to learn about their readiness and understand their training on patients with substance misuse disorder. A 21-items questionnaire was formulated and then distributed among dental interns at KAUFD. The participants filled the questionnaire at the start of dental seminars organized by the intern office. A total of 130 interns completed the questionnaire. Drugs were perceived harmful and problematic in the region of 83% of participants. However, 52% of the participants did not believe that crimes were related to drug use. It was believed that most drugs have oral manifestations and dental practitioners should be trained to identify patients with SUD and modify the treatment plan accordingly. Participants believed that screening skills should be introduced to undergraduate students in their 4 th and 5 th years. Dentists reflect the understanding of the importance of addressing substance use however the competencies of screening and referrals are lacking in their training. Dealing with the global issue of drug abuse can be supported by including training as part of the curriculum and educating dental graduates and postgraduates on screening and basic interventions of patients with SUD.

Older people living with HIV (OPLWH) have higher rates of substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs) than their HIV-negative peers. Addressing health care needs of OPLWH who use substances is more challenging than for those who do not: they are highly impacted by comorbid conditions, substance use can interact with other medications (including antiretroviral therapy-ART) and reduce their effectiveness, and substance use has been associated with reduced adherence to ART and increased risky behaviors (including sexual risks). People who use substances also suffer disparities along the HIV continuum of care, resulting in lower viral suppression rates and poorer health outcomes. They are especially impacted by stigma and stress, which have implications for HIV treatment and care. Recommendations for health care providers working with OPLWH who use substances include: (1) the need to screen and refer for multiple associated conditions, and (2) training/continuing education to enhance care management and maximize health outcomes.
