Continuing Airworthiness: Major Drivers and Challenges in Civil and Military Aviation

Abstract: A wide regulatory reform is taking place world-wide in the continuing airworthiness domain. The major influences for promoting changes in how continuing airworthiness is managed are civil and military aircraft accidents to which fatigue, corrosion, wear, deterioration in ageing aircraft and the need for regulatory harmonisation of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) signatory states and the military were the contributing factors. Another emerging factor is the conversion of older passenger air… Show more

“…The aviation sector is in the top ranks among the sectors with high value added where high technology is most considerably used (Bao and Ding, 2014;Hampson et al, 2012). Certification of maintenance organizations and personnel, education and training and information sharing and administration are challenges of the regulatory reform about civil and military aviation (Le and Lappas, 2015). Organization structurerecruitment and trainingis one of the main research areas in aircraft maintenance (Shanmugam and Robert, 2015).…”

“…The maintenance industry reacted to the need for systemic solutions by first focusing on developing awareness-level training programs (Patankar and Taylor, 2008). Certification of maintenance organizations and personnel, education and training and information sharing and administration are challenges of the regulatory reform about civil and military aviation (Le and Lappas, 2015).…”

“…The selection process of military pilots favors physically and behaviorally fit and resilient individuals. As a consequence, health-related incidents, in general, are rare, but safety culture and aircraft maintenance related issues may be relevant in later aviation incidents (Soeters et al, 2000;Le & Lappas, 2016;Chatzi, 2018). To the best of our knowledge there are no studies on previous military pilots' fatal aviation accidents in their subsequent professional or private pilot aviation careers.…”

“…Many authors across the world emphasize the significance of aviation maintenance quality assessment (Gališanskis, 2004) and the airworthiness challenges that have to be faced in both civil and military aviation (Thian, 2015;Le & Lappas, 2015). The issues of the available multialternativeness in relation to airworthiness management and aircraft maintenance in fast developing economies of India and China are discussed in a recent publication (Kourousis & Comer, 2018).…”
