Abstract. Body sensor networks (BSN) promise to enhance quality of life in common human habitats. The very next and natural step towards the improvement of the already valuable applications based on BSN is the incorporation of body actuator devices which adapt its actuation dynamically based on the information provided by the body sensors, thus forming Body Sensor and Actuator Networks (BS&AN). This paper shows how BS&AN can be exploited to create an innovative system to support the treatment of patients affected by Parkinson's Disease (PD). The combination of clinical and technological knowledge in BS&AN allows to significantly improve the quality of life of patients suffering from PD.

STEPSTONE is a joint industry-university project to create open source technology that would enable the scalable, "friction-free" integration of device-based healthcare solutions into enterprise systems using a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Specifically, STEPSTONE defines a first proposal to a Service Oriented Device Architecture (SODA) framework, and provides for initial reference implementations. STEPSTONE also intends to encourage a broad community effort to further develop the framework and its implementations. In this paper, we present SODA, along with two implementation proposals of SODA's device integration. We demonstrate the ease by which SODA was used to develop an end-to-end personal healthcare monitoring system. We also demonstrate the ease by which the STEPSTONE system was extended by other participants -Washington State University -to include additional devices and end user interfaces. We show clearly how SODA and therefore SODA devices make integration almost automatic, replicable, and scalable. This allows telehealth system developers to focus their energy and attention on the system functionality and other important issues, such as usability, privacy, persuasion and outcome assessment studies.

SummaryBecause of growing financial pressures in healthcare and a shift in pathologies, patients are discharged earlier and care is organized at home, requiring e-homecare services to support care and patient integration in society. As these services are built by different vendors, integration is complex. Therefore a broker platform has been designed using the web service technology. The broker allows efficient data communication and guarantees quality requirements such as security, availability and cost-efficiency by dynamically selecting and composing services, minimizing user interactions and simplifying authentication through single-signon so that users do not need to authenticate to each service separately. A platform prototype and several e-homecare services (e-alarm, tele-monitoring, audiodiary and video-chat) have been implemented and were evaluated by diabetes and multiple sclerosis patients. When a user starts the application, he is requested to authenticate himself using his electronic identity card. Once authenticated, a set of buttons is added to the client, giving access to the e-homecare services. The startup time and overhead imposed by the platform was experienced by the patients to be small enough. Combined with having all e-homecare services integrated in a single client application, requiring only one login, resulted in a high quality of experience by the patients.
