Contingent Valuation of Woodland-Owner Private Amenities in Spain, Portugal, and California

Abstract: Most of the Mediterranean woodlands in Spain, Portugal, and California are managed as agrosilvopastoral enterprises, producing some combination of livestock, wood, cork products, and crops, as well as wildlife habitat and diverse environmental services. Private amenity benefits to landowners have been suggested as an explanation for high land prices and the persistence of such rangeland enterprises despite apparently marginal cash returns. In this study, private amenity values are estimated using a contingent … Show more

“…This is a nominal rate, since landowners were not asked to consider inflation when answering the question. This value was low compared with other estimations of amenity profitability rates in oak woodlands in other Mediterranean climates (Campos et al 2009), probably because properties in California are larger and likely closer to the saturation point for amenity values.…”

“…However, the private amenity values estimated from Campos et al (2009) can be a good approximation of private amenity values in our study area. The woodlands from these two areas (the ANP and Stone pine forest in Huelva Province) are close to each other (no more than 150 km).…”

“…In this particular case, we employ the results of a contingent valuation (CV) survey applied to estimate the value of landowner private amenities of Los Alcornocales Natural Park (ANP) in Cádiz Province (Campos et al, 2009). We use the mean willingness to pay (WTP) estimated for the ANP to value landowner amenities in our study area (Stone pine forests in Huelva Province).…”

“…This fact implies that, among other reasons, in this study, no environmental selfconsumption that owners of the forest systems might make was taken into account in spite of its importance in some forest ecosystems (Campos and Caparrós, 2006;Campos et al, 2009). This was due both to technical reasons (the titularity of the forest properties being studied was unknown), and to the use of the benefit transfer method.…”
