Continent‐ocean transition on the Vøring Plateau, NE Atlantic, derived from densely sampled ocean bottom seismometer data

Abstract: [1] A 180 km long seismic wide-angle profile was acquired across the Vøring Plateau, NE Atlantic, using a tuned air gun array and three-component ocean bottom seismometers deployed with $5 km spacing. The seismic P wave data have been modeled by ray tracing/inversion, and the model has been constrained by S wave and gravity modeling. The data and modeling have allowed us to depict the crustal structure and nature of the continent-ocean transition (COT) in a classical volcanic margin case. The P wave velocity n… Show more

“…Therefore, additional indicators must be considered when estimating the reliability of the final model. Such quality indicators are the signal-to-noise ratio for individual phases and the ray-coverage for different parts of the model (Breivik et al, 2005;Mjelde et al, 2005). The reliability of the Vp/Vs-model will thus depend on the validity of the underlying P-wave velocity model, the data quality of the horizontal components and the uncertainty of the travel-time picks.…”

“…To the south, the mid-Norwegian Vøring margin is characterized by an increased but along-strike-variable initial ocean crust thickness (e.g., Skogseid and Eldholm, 1995). Packages of SDRS are commonly present at this margin, and the thickness of the LCB varies along strike (Mjelde et al, 2005;Ebbing et al, 2006). At the Møre margin (Fig.…”
