Contextual Therapy: Brief Treatment of an Addict and Spouse

Abstract: The clinical and theoretical applications of contextual therapy for the treatment of drug abuse are presented. “…The meaning of gambling patterns can become evident when the family of origin is explored. In some cases this will lead to notions of 'how social, intergenerational, and nuclear family dynamics contribute to the patterns that produce and maintain' a problematic pattern (Bernal, Rodriguez and Diamond, 1990). This framework for therapy is an application to the problem gambling field of more general family therapy concepts and approaches such as identification of needs and resources, establishing trust in relationships, and exploring intergenerational patterns.…”

“…This inquiry also includes questions focused on recognizing intergenerational patterns (Bernal, Rodr ıguez, & Diamond, 1990) whereby making a genogram may be helpful (Lim & Nakamoto, 2008;Macvean, McGoldrick, Evans, & Brown, 2001;McGoldrick, Gerson, & Petry, 2008). Unlocking these care patterns is an important intervention not only for analyzing possible disruptions in reciprocal care but also for raising awareness of family members and encouraging them to rebalance this reciprocal care (Grunebaum, 1987(Grunebaum, , 1990bKrasner, 1986).…”

“…We agreed that I would use their facilities, within the inner city, and would provide services to this specific population. Additionally, I would collaborate with staff at Ad Hoc, training and doing co-therapy, as well as attempting to develop a contextual treatment model that could be eventually manualized and funded via grants (Bernal, Rodríguez, & Diamond, 1990). In the meantime, my services were provided pro bono.…”
