Contextual Ontologies

Abstract: Contextual ontologies are ontologies that characterize a concept by a set of properties that vary according to context. Contextual ontologies are now crucial for users who intend to exchange information in a domain. Existing ontology languages are not capable of defining such type of ontologies. The objective of this paper is to formally define a contextual ontology language to support the development of contextual ontologies. In this paper, we use description logics as an ontology language and then we extend … Show more

“…There are a number of different definitions and uses for this term. Context appears in many disciplines as a "metainformation" which characterizes the precise situation of an entity to describe a group of conceptual entities, or as a logical construct to facilitate reasoning services (Benslimane et al, 2006). Schilit and Theimer (1994) describe context as location, identities of nearby people, objects and changes in these objects.…”

“…In [3], [4], authors propose C-DL following the importing approach. Based on description logics, C-DL extends classical DL constructors by what they call contextual constructors.…”

“…In MCS, each context is defined as a self-contained knowledge source which includes the set of axioms and inference rules to model the system and perform local reasoning. In the literature, many definitions of multi-context systems have been proposed (see e.g., [8,9]). In [8], Brewka et al define multicontext system as a number of people, agents, databases etc.…”

“…to describe the available information from a set of contexts and inference rules and specify the information flow among these contexts. In [9], Benslimane et al have described ontology as a context, which is itself an independent selfcontained knowledge source having a set of axioms and inference rules with its own reasoner to perform reasoning. In this work, we consider the concept of context in two levels.…”
