Purpose This paper aims to present a historical case study of Norwegian transnational entrepreneurs (1880s–1930s) and the ecosystems that they founded in Russia’s Arctic periphery. Drawing from the contemporary transnational entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystem literature, and inspired by AnnaLee Saxenian’s concept of “brain circulation,” this study explores the journey and impact of these entrepreneurs in a time of evolving political turbulence. Design/methodology/approach This study applies a mixed-methodology approach, drawing from nine qualitative interviews held in 2021 and secondary material, including historical books, a podcast, videos and archival data. Findings The Norwegian entrepreneurs were both “pulled” by and “pushed” to the Russian region, their “New America,” where they could apply their personal skills and exploit their rich social and financial capital to establish a local entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, radical political change altered the context, which led many of the entrepreneurs to re-migrate to Norway. Research limitations/implications This paper demonstrates the role of the political context for contemporary entrepreneurship and management research, as transnational entrepreneurs and international expatriates remain vulnerable to political change. Practical implications Public-policy actors and managers in companies need to support highly-skilled transnational entrepreneurs, including expatriates, in a setting with turbulence, crisis and even war, to foster the sustainable contribution of entrepreneurial migrants to regional economic development across different countries. Originality/value This paper presents an original, novel case study on the historical role of transnational entrepreneurs across different cultural settings, their impact on a foreign peripheral location, including social-network building and evolving political change in the historical context. The findings are relevant for contemporary management literature.

Resumo Em alinhamento com os estudos organizacionais históricos (Decker, Hassard, & Rowlinson, 2021; Maclean, Harvey, & Clegg, 2016) e buscando uma reorientação geográfica mais ao sul global, no foco nas pesquisas históricas e em estudos organizacionais e de gestão (A. S. M. Costa & Wanderley, 2021; Wanderley & A. Barros, 2019), este artigo tem como objetivo compreender o posicionamento ideológico e a atuação político-discursiva do jornal Folha de S. Paulo no período inicial da ditadura civil-militar brasileira (1964-1985). Para tanto, construiu-se um referencial teórico sustentado por duas correntes historiográficas (Empresariado e Ditadura; História e Imprensa) e pelos conceitos de discurso, ideologia e poder articulados pela análise crítica de discurso. Em termos de fontes documentais, foram coletados 112 editoriais diários, publicados de janeiro a junho de 1964 e disponíveis no arquivo histórico da empresa pesquisada. Para a realização da análise dos dados coletados, foram utilizados o aporte teórico-metodológico do modelo tridimensional de Norman Fairclough (2016) e a sua proposta de utilização do modelo de análise de estratégias de construções ideológicas de J. B. Thompson (2011). Como resultado, foi possível identificar três momentos na trajetória de construção discursiva do jornal Folha de S. Paulo em relação ao golpe militar de 1964 no Brasil: 1) significativa contribuição para a desestabilização do governo democrático do presidente João Goulart; 2) forte alinhamento com o golpe militar e seus desdobramentos imediatos; e 3) apoio ao posterior governo Castelo Branco, mas já com a enunciação de algumas ressalvas. Por fim, é possível afirmar que essa organização jornalística atuou fortemente não apenas como instrumento de informação, mas, principalmente, como produtora e reprodutora de discursos específicos em prol de determinado grupo social e de seus atos ditatoriais subsequentes. Diante desse quadro, tornam-se cada vez mais necessárias pesquisas históricas sobre as relações políticas e socioeconômicas entre empresas, governo e sociedade ao longo do tempo e seus desdobramentos na atualidade.

As historians start researching the late twentieth century, they are increasingly finding traces of the past created digitally. At the same time, use of computers to digitise analogue material means that many pre-digital sources have been reproduced digitally. As such, future historical research will increasingly include digital forms of evidence and computer-based research tools. This paper explores how such resources might be used within business history, bridging the gap to digital history, and reflecting upon their methodological implications. We present a framework for distinguishing between sources, elaborating their differing digital characteristics and historical authenticity. We then draw on our own use of digital company records and media archives to outline two different ways digital sources can be interrogated by business historians.We argue that digital sources afford unique insights and new opportunities for historical knowledge production, but to access them, business historians will likely adapt aspects of their future practice.
