Contexts, Mechanisms, and Outcomes That Matter in Dutch Community-Based Physical Activity Programs Targeting Socially Vulnerable Groups

Abstract: This article presents a practitioner-based approach to identify key combinations of contextual factors (C) and mechanisms (M) that trigger outcomes (O) in Dutch community-based health-enhancing physical activity (CBHEPA) programs targeting socially vulnerable groups. Data were collected in six programs using semi-structured interviews and focus groups using a timeline technique. Sessions were recorded, anonymized, and transcribed. A realist synthesis protocol was used for data-driven and thematic analysis of C… Show more

“…Thus, this measure was considered inappropriate for this context. Instead, the narrative timeline technique was used at the end of the first and second year of implementation to evaluate activities implemented in that particular school year and to discuss perceived highlights and perceived failures during implementation with the working groups [29]. Participants concluded with a discussion about "what to do next".…”

“…The impacts on the different levels will be integrated and related to the action principles using realist synthesis [81] in the data analysis, facilitating the identification of the contextual factors and program mechanisms determining the outcomes (or impacts). These context–mechanism–outcome (CMO) configurations [18] will provide insights into the overall impacts in relation to the action principles.…”

“…For instance, the analysis of qualitative data from interview transcripts may be based on coding in terms of ‘outcomes as observed by respondents,’ ‘context conditions’, and ‘underlying mechanisms – or effective elements – in the actual programme.’ The final research output from realist synthesis is not a statement of effect size, as the same programme will have different effects in different contexts, but a refinement of the programme theory. Previous use of realist synthesis in the project Communities on the Move provided a rich and detailed understanding of mechanisms at programme level [ 76 ].…”
