Objective: The objective of our study was to investigate the relationship between social network and social support with early childhood caries in preschool children. Methods: A transversal study with 100 children aging at most 5 years and 11 months was performed. The children underwent a clinical dental evaluation and their parents answered a structured questionnaire. Results: Dental caries was associated with time of bottle feeding (p=0.031) (RP=5.203) and number of dental appointment (p=0,010) (RP=6,293). Moreover, dental caries was also directly associated with the number of siblings living together in the same house (p=0.002) (r=0.372), while inverse correlation was found between dental caries and social support (p=0.028) (r= - 0.219). Conclusion: Preschool children whose supervisors had a better social support presented superior oral health, suggesting that social support from caregivers is associated with improved pediatric oral health.

<div>Introdução: Na infância a cárie dentária representa a principal patologia bucal. O cuidado familiar é necessário para a manutenção da saúde bucal da criança. Objetivo: Este estudo teve por objetivo analisar a relação entre o contexto familiar e a saúde bucal de pré-escolares, utilizando as abordagens qualitativa e quantitativa. Metodologia: O estudo epidemiológico foi de corte transversal e avaliou a saúde bucal de 528 crianças de 18 a 48 meses de idade assistidas pela Estratégia Saúde da Família de Salvador-BA e entrevistou suas respectivas mães, em 2007; já o estudo qualitativo foi realizado com mães, avós e profissionais de saúde bucal, que participaram de grupos focais. Os resultados buscaram articular ambas as abordagens. Resultados: As condições de saúde bucal deste grupo foram marcadas pela prevalência e gravidade da cárie dentária. Observou-se como fatores associados à ocorrência da cárie na dentição decídua: idade da criança, renda familiar, escolaridade materna, número de moradores por cômodo, tipo de casa, relação mãe-filho e alcoolismo materno. A cárie é percebida como um problema importante. Conclusão: Ações intersetoriais e o acolhimento nos serviços são necessárias para o planejamento de estratégias de saúde bucal mais efetivas para os pré-escolares.</div>

Papacarie gel is an agent that eliminates the need for local anesthesia and reduces the need for using a drill. However, there is no information regarding the cost per procedure. Therefore we analyzed the cost, per procedure, of Papacarie gel compared to the traditional method (drilling), and performed a comparison between these methods of carious tissue removal. A randomized clinical trial was performed with 24 children with an average age of 5.9 years old. Of these children, 12 were boys and 12 were girls, which resulted in a total of 46 restorations. Patients were separated into: Papacarie group (caries removal with the chemical-mechanical method - Papacarie gel) and Drill group (caries removal with the traditional method - drilling). Values of the materials used in the procedures, heart rate (before, 5 minutes during, and after dental treatment), and the total consultation duration were recorded. A level of significance of 5% was adopted. Papacarie had a lower cost per procedure ($ 0.91) when compared to the traditional method ($ 1.58). Papacarie provided a cost reduction of 42% compared to the traditional method. Using local anesthesia ($ 2.17), the cost reduction increased to 58%. In the procedure using drill + Papacarie ($ 1.37), the cost reduction was 33%. Heart rate, consultation duration, and number of restorations were not statistically different. Papacarie shows an excellent cost benefit for minimally invasive removal of carious tissue and is a feasible alternative for public health care.
