Context-related problems and university students’ dropout intentions—the buffering effect of personal best goals

Abstract: This study investigates the effects of contextual and motivational factors as well as, crucially, their interaction in predicting university students' dropout intentions. We focus on contextrelated problems in students' degree program as contextual factors and students' personal best goals (PB goals) as motivational factors. The sample of this study comprised 432 university students (74.3% female) enrolled in master's degree programs at Austrian universities. Data was analyzed by means of structural equation m… Show more

“…The complex phenomenon of student dropout is approached by the impact of various categories of variables, phenomena and factors (Díaz & De León, 2016) but the question of how these frameworks interact to predict students' dropout needs indeed further analysis (Bardach et al, 2019). In regards to the above, in the present study an attempt is made to investigate the hierarchical sequence via which the factors imparted to the academic context interact and affect students' tendency to dropout of university studies.…”

“…In a broader context, it is accepted that the inadequacy of information provided can lead the student to early -departure‖ from studies (Bardach et al, 2019;Heublein, 2014). Indicatively, the research of Zając and Komendant-Brodowska (2019) emphasized that the insufficient information before the choice of the subject of study, the unexpected difficulty of certain courses not adequately described from the beginning, the complexity of both the study guide and admission criteria were crucial factors -triggering‖ the decision to -leave‖ (Zając & Komendant-Brodowska, 2019).…”

“…While students' dropout is considered as a major international problem there seems no one widely acceptable system to deal with it insofar due to multi-dimensionality and the particular complexity of the phenomenon. In addition, it is important to recall the issue that Bardach et al (2019) poses about the need factors interacting towards dropout prediction to be further enlightened and analyzed (Bardach et al, 2019).…”

“…Nevertheless, the definition of student dropout remains under consideration; different sets of factors and phenomena (Díaz & De León, 2016) along with the evolution of various approaches such as the educational, individual and the holistic one integrating the above (Bardach et al, 2019) could not either be neglected.…”

“…Here, focusing on individual determinants is particularly interesting, since these have a direct influence on the course of studies (Gensch & Kliegl, 2012). Especially individual determinants such as test anxiety or a lack of motivation in self-regulated learning have increasingly been analyzed in association with student dropout (Bardach et al, 2019;Bernardo et al, 2019;Blüthmann et al, 2008;Respondek et al, 2017;Schnettler et al, 2020a, b). Hence, it is of great interest to take a closer look at these correlates of student dropout when analyzing its process-as it can be assumed that different phases of developing a dropout intention relate to a different degree to them.…”
