Context-dependent vantage points in literary narratives: A functional cognitive approach

Abstract: This paper offers a model for the interpretation of stories as referential scenes in narrative discourses as joint attentional scenes (see Tomasello 1999). It is proposed that narrative interpretation crucially builds on the contextdependent processing of the physical, social, and mental worlds presented by the narrative, pertaining to spatio-temporal relations, interpersonal relations, and the mental states of participants, respectively (see Tátrai 2010a; cf. Verschueren 1999). Set against the background of s… Show more

“…The meaningful functioning of language includes several discourse types commonly referred to as "narrative" whose defining feature is that their discourse participants construe and share their experiences of the world in (and through) stories (see Tátrai 2015, cf. Bruner 1986, Tomasello 1999.…”

“…Researchers have also developed the term vantage point (Tátrai 2015), which integrates the narrator's physical, social, and mental perspectives as an epistemic grounding in an intersubjective context of shared attention (Tátrai 2015: 13-14), which is a definition in line with the cognitive understanding of perspective.…”

“…On a functional cognitive approach, it is a crucial aspect of the meaningful functioning of language that every utterance is produced from a particular point of view but can be interpreted from different points of view (Tátrai 2011(Tátrai , 2015Verschueren 1999). Interactants in a given situation follow and direct each other's attention to the matters of the world in order to share or modify each other's mental representations and orientations.…”
