Context-aware assistive systems at the workplace

Abstract: Context-aware assistive systems (CAAS) have become ubiquitous in cars or smartphones but not in industrial work contexts: while there are systems controlling work results, context-specific assistance during the processes is hardly offered. As a result production workers still have to rely on their skills and expertise. While un-impaired workers may cope well with this situation, elderly or impaired persons in production environments need context-sensitive assistance. The contribution of the research presented h… Show more

“…They describe this as an "catalytic effect" [44], that is caused by the differentiating cognitive potential of the impaired individuals based on a study, where 20 cognitively impaired workers had to assemble a LEGO Duplo scenario with the help of an AR projection. Afterwards, Korn et al [43] developed a framework for a stationary, context-aware AR projection based approach that was evaluated in a study with 20 impaired participants. Their findings confirmed the findings from [45] that participants were faster using the AR projection compared to state of the art instructions, but made more errors.…”

“…Individual work capacity may have played a role here. In a follow-up study of Korn et al (2014), the positive effects of projected instructions on productivity were not reproduced. Heinz et al (2021) did report positive impacts, such as increased satisfaction and independence for the workers combined with higher productivity, following the implementation of CST in an assembly line.…”

“…Context-aware supporting systems have been successfully introduced into smartphones and cars, and in several cases into working contexts. PWD and elderly people need context-sensitive support in production facilities to control work results, not only trusting in their personal expertise and skills" [1,20].…”
