Content of phospholipids in human diets studied by the duplicate-portion technique

Abstract: 1. The phospholipid intake by eight healthy women was studied by the duplicate-portion technique, i.e. chemical analyses of duplicates of the food consumed. Their intake of phospholipids was 1.5-2.5 mmol lipid-phosphorus/d, which corresponds to 0.0234059 mmol lipid-P/g dietary fat and 0.240.45 mmol lipid-P/MJ respectively.2. Choline phosphoglyceride constituted 48&700 mmol/mol and ethanolamine phosphogl yceride 170-240 mmol/mol total lipid-P. Most of the choline in nature occurs as choline phospholipids, the i… Show more

“…Dietary PL is a minor source of PL presented to the gut at the time digestion and absorption, 270 whereas bile-derived PL is reported to be the major source of intestinal PL (51). In this study, we included equal amounts of exogenous PC in both TG-AA* and PC-AA* doses to avoid any confounding effects of exogenous PC on intestinal assembly of lipoproteins and plasma PC content.…”

“…The main dietary lipids are TAG, but small amounts of phospholipids occur in most foods (1). Egg yolks, meat, fish, dairy products, and several grains are relatively rich in phospholipids (2).…”

“…Although the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome is complicated and precise details of the underlying mechanisms are not known, it has been suggested that the quality of dietary fats may be an important modulator in terms of the risks associated with this syndrome 2) . Although triglycerides (TGs) make up the majority of dietary fat, phospholipids (PLs) compose about 3-8% of the daily intake of total dietary fats 3,4) . Growing evidence indicates that dietary PLs, especially phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylserine (PS), have beneficial effects compared with dietary TGs.…”
