Content‐based image retrieval of multiphase CT images for focal liver lesion characterization

Abstract: Multiphase CT images can be used in content-based image retrieval for FLL's categorization and result in good performance in comparison with single-phase CT images. The proposed method has the potential to improve the radiologists' diagnostic accuracy and confidence by providing visually similar lesions with confirmed diagnoses for their interpretation of clinical studies.

“…Like other hepatic focal lesions: triple-phase liver CT protocol plays an important role in the preliminary diagnosis; On the other hand, percutaneous liver biopsy is necessary not only for the confirmation of the diagnosis but also for the establishment of treatment options like neoadjuvant chemotherapy as in our case. [ 11 ] Many authors recommend upfront surgery without preoperative chemotherapy as long as the tumor is localized, resectable, and away from the major vascular structures by the CT scan criteria. However, the treatment with neoadjuvant chemotherapy can lead to a decrease in the tumor size, minimize further spread or distant metastasis, allow the surgical resection of the primary unresectable tumors, and most important decrease the rate of recurrence.…”

“…The protocol and ability to acquire a multiphasic study is paramount in characterizing liver lesions. Triphasic images are the method of choice, which give a significant improvement in the result compared to singlephase studies [18] . The ability for threedimensional reconstruction helps in assessing the vascular anatomy, the liver and tumor volumes.…”
