The new educational policy in Indonesia does not require English as a compulsory subject in primary school. To respond to the current policy, some primary schools, especially Islamic affiliated primary schools still have a commitment to provide English lessons as an extracurricular subject. Since there is no regulation toward the teaching and learning process, implementing Content-Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach into teaching materials aims to improve the learning process. This study used ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model to design the CLIL materials and reached the third stage. The results highlight that after conducting a need analysis, the syllabus and the students' activity book consists of three selected topics that integrate Islamic values into CLIL model. They were Caring for Living Things, My Heroes, and My Dream Job. Those topics were adapted from a thematic book applied in the school partner under the Curriculum 2013. These topics were designed into three main subjects i.e., Science, Islamic Content, and Arts. Furthermore, before each topic, vocabulary-based activities were presented followed by three kinds of activities. Islamic values are integrated into CLIL materials to promote Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) also to advocate local wisdom-based curriculum, particularly infusing the Muslim cultures and values. This study concludes that there is a need to integrate Islamic content to English materials in Islamic primary affiliated schools.

Content and Language Integrated Learning in Writing in the Junior High School

The purpose of this research is to analyze the steps and writing competency implemented through CLIL in writing. This research is aimed at seventh-grade students in the Junior High School at SMPN 4 Busungbiu, Singaraja. The participants of students in the Junior High School were 30 students in one class. The first time, the researcher found the diagnostic of students writing competency in SMPN 4 Busungbiu. The mixed method combining descriptive qualitative and quantitative was applied in this study. The data collected by Classroom research that determined by who does such as the teacher, the research then used a syntax, lesson plan (RPP), and rubric as the instruments. The result of students writing competency is seen by the writing component, namely: 1) Title, 2) Topic sentence, 3) Develop Topic Sentence, 4) Grammatical, 5) Vocabulary, and 6) Punctuation. There were 73.3% students had corrected in writing descriptive text based on seven components of writing. Almost same with descriptive text, there were 70% students had corrected in writing procedure text. The result showed a significant increase in students’ writing competency after being implemented CLIL method by the teacher.

English teaching at primary school needs some improvement, particularly in its giving exposure and contextualizing English content. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach can be an effective way to the success of English teaching at the primary school level. Thus, this community service aims at empowering SD Aisyiyah Kota Malang with teaching thematic lessons through CLIL concepts by infusing Islamic content. The strategies implemented were formulated in five stages: need analysis, professional development workshop to school teachers and teaching assistants, syllabus and material design, implementation, and evaluation. Results show that school teachers and teaching assistants were able to integrate CLIL approach observed from the syllabus and material design. Also, students were all enthusiastic and engaged during the classroom activities. This community service implies that teaching assistants can foster English learning engagement for primary school graders.
