“…Among the lakes, as another type of surface water resource studied, the highest value for the conservation priority was ascribed to Lake Urmia (located in West Azerbaijan province, northwestern Iran) due to its conservation status, high biological sensitivity, and habitat threat to the area. Additionally, agriculture, farmer behavior, and excessive groundwater consumption must be considered [60]. Since 2005, this hypersaline lake in northwestern Iran began to dry up [61].…”

“…Rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events [20][21][22] have far-reaching consequences for human health, food security, water availability, and economic stability.Climate change exacerbates the risk of vector-borne diseases, malnutrition, and mental health is-sues [8,32,38], while also contributing to the displacement of populations and heightened conflicts over dwindling resources [26,39]. These impacts disproportionately affect marginalized communities, further exacerbating existing inequalities and straining already overburdened healthcare systems [27,37,40]. Mitigating the adverse effects of climate change requires a concerted, multi-pronged approach.…”

“…The basin's semi-arid climate, topography and unique features, such as Lake Urmia, make it a valuable site for research and analysis. The degradation of Lake Urmia is a pressing environmental and socio-economic issue that requires further investigation to understand the underlying causes and to develop effective solutions to mitigate its impacts (Es'haghi et al, 2022;Soltani & Azari, 2022;Tourian et al, 2015). The study area location is given in Figure 2.…”
