Content analysis of research trends in instructional design models: 1999-2014

Abstract: This study examines studies on instructional design models by applying content analysis. It covers 113 papers published in 44 international (e.g., system-oriented, class-oriented, or product-oriented). Results identified the most preferred models as ADDIE, ARCS, Gagne and Briggs, instructional design models were most common. These results show recent trends in instructional design models and will contribute to both researchers and instructional designers.

“…Other recent publications have refined their focus of understanding IDT scholarship. One focused on the research trends in instructional design models, striving to be more comprehensive by analyzing data from 44 journals (Göksu, Özcan, Çakir, & Göktas, ). They found system‐based models are most common (eg, ADDIE, ARCS).…”

“…While it may seem to be eminence-based and historically rooted in instructional theory, its usefulness in developing education and training programmes is still evident in the 21st century [34][35][36][37]. Using the five phases of ADDIE, we have constructed relevant learning materials for a polytechnic biomedical science programme that percolated with the concept of precision medicine.…”

“…As an investigational technique, content analysis methodology dates back to the 18th century, and offers flexibility through the use of both quantitative and qualitative data (Obilade & Burton, ). This methodology has been used extensively for searching the literature (Obilade & Burton, ), and has been used successfully in examining design literature (Cho & Parks, ; Lee & Evans, ; Obilade & Burton, ; Goksu et al , ). Cho and Park () performed content analysis on twenty human performance technology articles published in the journal Performance Improvement Quarterly (PIQ) to investigate current themes.…”

“…Cho and Park () performed content analysis on twenty human performance technology articles published in the journal Performance Improvement Quarterly (PIQ) to investigate current themes. Goksu et al () also utilised content analysis when reviewing 113 articles written on instructional design models. Goksu et al () investigated which models were most commonly utilised in the literature with the intent to develop an empirically‐derived list of preferred models.…”
