Abstract: Contenido de metales en sedimentos y en (Stimpson, 1857) in eight sectors of south Mejillones Bay, Chile was determined. Only Zn showed a certain degree of contamination in the sediments of the bay with a rate of geoaccumulation of 2.8. In analyzing the content of metals in E. analoga, we determined that this species would bioaccumulate some of the metals analyzed but low magnitude, with the exception of Zn bioaccumulation factor of 2.07. The similarity dendrogram performed with bioaccumulation index data re… Show more

“…In these waters, there is intense maritime traffic, fishing, and tourism, and their beaches receive millions of bathers (Velazco, 2011). Domestic, industrial, and port waste are the main source of pollution and trace elements in coastal waters (Valdés et al, 2011;Guíñez et al, 2015;Sáez et al, 2018). Marine sediments constitute the main trace elements reservoir for most substances of anthropic origin in marine ecosystems (Hasan et al, 2013;Marín et al, 2016;Braga-Castro et al, 2018;Enrique-Romero et al, 2019), and the presence of Cd, Ni, and Mn has been recorded (Solís et al, 2011).…”

“…Despite being a heavily intervened area, few studies have been carried out on invertebrate organisms as bioindicators of adverse conditions in the bay. Among these we highlight the work of [22], referring to the effect of dredging on the diversity of macrobenthic communities due to the construction of Angamos Port, and an ex-situ research carried out by Guiñez et al [23], who studied the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in the crustacean Emerita analoga in the intertidal zone of the bay. Therefore, our work focused on implementing foraminifera as early biomarkers of heavy metal contamination, based on their morphological responses indicating environmental stress effects.…”
