Contemporary Techniques for Denture Fabrication

Abstract: This article reviews the fabrication of complete dentures and presents findings of recent technological studies that have relevance to current complete denture practice. In addition, summaries of two recent randomized controlled studies demonstrate the need for more deliberate prescription of impression materials.

“…It is possible that increased roughness is consequent to the use of a zinc oxide‐eugenol paste and led to such differences. In a crossover trial, McCord compared complete dentures fabricated on casts poured into three final impression materials: zinc oxide‐eugenol paste, poly(vinyl siloxane) or a mixture of impression compound and tracing compound. That study found that the use of zinc oxide‐eugenol paste impressions never resulted in patient preference, disclosing that the selection of impression materials matters to complete denture treatment's outcome.…”

“…Moreover, consideration of factors other than the adaption accuracy have been advocated in the selection of denture processing system 21,22) . However, newer denture materials and processing techniques are being introduced continuously because the contemporary technique for denture fabrication are still unsatisfactory 35) . A relatively higher fit of the denture base may be helpful in reducing the initial adaptation period of the denture wearer.…”

“…Additional randomized controlled trials that used similar simplified techniques for the fabrication of complete dentures should be performed with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods. (J Prosthet Dent 2015;113: [12][13][14][15][16] the use of a semi-adjustable articulator with a facebow, wax evaluation, and occlusal adjustment in a semiadjustable articulator. Any alternative method that eliminates any of the stages is called a simplified method, which means that the simplified method can vary among studies.…”
