Contemporary Review of Rhinoplasty

Abstract: e conducted a contemporary review covering advances and trends in primary and functional rhinoplasty as published during the past decade. Specifically, we reviewed studies supporting the evidence for functional rhinoplasty, nasal valve surgery, and septal reconstruction. In addition, key articles discussing cephalic malpositioning of the lower lateral cartilages and tip contouring are reviewed. We also report studies involving lateral osteotomy techniques, computer imaging, and the use of homologous, alloplast… Show more

“…There are multiple peer-reviewed articles (►Table 1) and expert opinions [11][12][13] in the facial plastic surgery literature summarizing the advantages of computer imaging prior to rhinoplasty. Studies have shown that computer-aided simulations improved communication between the patient and surgeon, increased patient confidence in surgery, and also enhanced the patient-physician relationship 3,6,[14][15][16] and surgical planning.…”

“…A major argument in favor of an endonasal approach is the reduction of surgical dissection, resulting in less edema which facilitates wound healing in turn producing more predictable results. 17 It has been suggested that minimal dissection with the endonasal approach creates an ideal envelope for securing implanted grafts decreasing the risk of graft movement and altering the nasal anatomy. 25 Fig.…”

“…16 Over the years, a myriad of techniques and approaches for septorhinoplasty have been described, some based on minimally invasive surgery, which could complicate the task of the surgeon, his field of vision, and his action by working on a limited space. 17 These argue that there is less trauma to the intranasal structures and the support mechanisms, and, therefore, a lower number of complications. 18 Textbooks describe each step of nasal surgery individually, with localized incisions and minimal dissection.…”

“…As mentioned by others [57,58], there is an inherent ethical dilemma in randomizing patients to certain surgical treatments. As a result, much of our knowledge in nasal valve surgery is based on retrospective reports.…”
