Contamination of Lakes in Broknes Peninsula, East Antarctica through the Pesticides and PAHs

Abstract: Present study was designed to evaluate the concentration of pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and some pesticides in the lake water samples, collected from five selected locations of Broknes peninsula during 34th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (ISEA) in austral summer of 2014 to 2015. A total of 15 lake water samples were collected from the different five lakes. In these samples, 34 pesticides and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were estimated. Lake water samples were processe… Show more

“…Bacterial cells have been studied to possess properties related to biomineralization, bioaccumulation, bioleaching, etc. The biotransformation of metals by bacteria has been observed by researchers and has generated interest in fabrication of NPs using bacteria (Ramanathan et al, 2013;Bhardwaj et al, 2019). A study conducted on Lactobacillus sp.…”

“…These pollutants are pesticides, insecticides, synthetic dyes, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as well as phenols (Lapworth et al, 2012). Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are harmful in nature and have been reported as hazardous to the environment (Bhardwaj and Jindal, 2019;Bhardwaj et al, 2020;. These organic pollutants enter aquatic bodies through agricultural runoff, industrial effluents, as well as sewages of domestic sectors.…”

“…Antarctica is an unpopulated continent and is regarded as the very last extreme wilderness on Earth (Bhardwaj & Jindal, 2019;Bhardwaj & Jindal, 2020;Bhardwaj & Jindal, 2022a). It is separated geographically from the other continents, and has unique biodiversity (Bhardwaj et al, 2021;Bhardwaj et al, 2023), and is endowed with glaciers.…”
