Contamination and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Soil and Ditch Sediments in Long-Term Mine Wastes Area

Abstract: The ecological and health risks posed by wastes discharged from mining areas to the environment and human health has aroused concern. 114 soil samples were collected from nine areas of long-term mine waste land in northwestern Yunnan to assess the pollution characteristics, ecological and health risks of heavy metals. The result revealed that the geo-accumulation indexes were Cd (4.00) > Pb (3.18) > Zn (1.87) > Cu (0.25). Semi-variance analysis revealed that Cd and Cu showed moderate spatial dependenc… Show more

“…The toxic response factor, T i , for each metal is as follows: Cd = 30, Hg = 40, As = 10, Pb = 5, Cr = 2, Cu = 5, and Zn = 1. The PERI classification is as follows: PERI ≤ 150 indicates a low level, whereas 150 < PERI ≤ 300, 300 < PERI ≤ 600, and PERI > 600 indicate a moderate, considerable, and strong level, respectively [ 35 , 36 ].…”

“…The risks posed by heavy metals to human health include non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Hazard quotient (HQ) and cancer risk (CR) can quantitatively characterize non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to humans that are exposed to heavy metals [ [39] , [40] , [41] ]. In this paper, the US EPA health risk assessment method is used to calculate the average daily exposure (ADD, mg·kg −1 d −1 ) under three exposure paths: …”
