“…Other studies, however, contrast with the above. For example, Stronkhorst et al [23] found differences in congener patterns between the diet and bird tissues: lower chlorinated biphenyls were more abundant in the diet and higher chlorinated biphenyls were more abundant in eggs of some aquatic birds from the Netherlands. Polychlorinated biphenyl congener patterns in several bird species from Canada were similar [24], reflecting perhaps similar metabolism, because birds had diverse diets.…”

“…High mo-PCB levels were expected based on a Dutch field study with cormorant chicks (Van den Berg e; where yolk-sac levels of 184 and 58 ixg mo-PCBs/g lipid were observed in respectively the B iesbosch and Oude Venen colony. Small herring contain significantly lower PCB-concentrations than fishes that overwinter locally, such as flounders (Platichthysflesus), 1.3 and 5.2 ~xg/g lipid respectively (Stronkhorst et al 1993). The difference in yolk-sac mo-PCB level between these two colonies was only 34 txg/g lipid, compared to 126 ixg/g lipid for the Cormorants.…”

“…Becker et al (1991) reported a reduced hatching success for common terns which correlated with increased PCB levels. The PCB-118 levels in common tern eggs from the brackish zone of the Dutch Western Scheldt estuary (0.1 to 0.7 Ixg/g WW, Stronkhorst et al 1993) partially overlap the range reported for Green Bay (0.32-1.56 tzg/g WW) where 75% reproductive impairment was observed (Kubiak et al 1989). Common terns offer the advantage of easily accessible nests, as they breed on the ground.…”
