Containing the spread of mumps on college campuses

Abstract: College campuses are vulnerable to infectious disease outbreaks, and there is an urgent need to develop better strategies to mitigate their size and duration, particularly as educational institutions around the world adapt to in-person instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Towards addressing this need, we applied a stochastic compartmental model to quantify the impact of university-level responses to contain a mumps outbreak at Harvard University in 2016. We used our model to determine which containment in… Show more

“…At the same time, residential universities are ideal environments for the study of pathogen transmission and the impact of interventions and surveillance thanks to their semi-insular character and their role as centers of innovation 12 . In response to SARS-CoV-2 they have widely employed high-cadence testing [13][14][15] , vaccination programs 16,17 , strict quarantine of cases in dedicated facilities [18][19][20][21] , and social distancing measures [22][23][24][25] . In addition, universities are wellpositioned to test and implement new surveillance methods that can subsequently be applied at greater scale.…”

“…Infectious disease threats faced by university campuses are well-documented, with outbreaks of influenza, meningococcal disease, and other respiratory illnesses having been reported in these settings over the past decade [1,2,3,4]. COVID-19 has now joined this list, rapidly unfolding across universities throughout the United States (US) and globally [5, 6,7,8,9].…”
