Container Slot Co-Allocation Planning with Joint Fleet Agreement in a Round Voyage for Liner Shipping

Abstract: In the liner shipping market carriers share container slots to offer better service and realize economies of scale. This paper studies slot co-allocation planning for a joint fleet in a round trip for a shipping alliance in the liner shipping industry. In particular, a conceptual model is developed based on joint fleet and slot co-allocation management. The factors affecting slot co-allocation planning are explored in detail. A large-scale integer programming model is formulated to guide carriers in an allianc… Show more

“…According to the reviewed optimization papers in this section, presented in Table 6, a wide range of optimization problems and quantitative solution approaches have been utilized in the literature to model SA collaborations. In this regard, our review revealed that the majority of research in this area is focused on enhancing the profit of SA members (Álvarez-SanJaime et al 2013;Wang et al 2016;Lin et al 2017;Zhang et al 2019) and capacity optimization (Song and Carter 2009;Lu et al 2010;Chen and Yahalom 2013;Dong et al 2015). As for the solution approaches, cooperative game theory and linear programming have been employed the most.…”

“…Many former research studies have addressed terminal problems, including berth template planning (Imai et al , 2014; Moorthy and Teo, 2006), yard template generation (Zhen, 2014; He and Tan, 2018; Tan et al , 2017) at the strategic level and berth allocation (Arango et al , 2011; Lee and Wang, 2010), crane scheduling (Kim and Park, 2004; He et al , 2018), yard space allocation (Jin et al , 2016; Chen and Yahalom, 2013; Chen et al , 2017) at the operational level. For a general overview, review works are given by Vis and Koster (2003), Steenken et al (2004) and Stahlbock and Voß (2008).…”

“…2. Acquisition among liners 2.1 Shipping line business operations form and similarity Shipping lines offer shipping services in terms of service loops that vessels are allocated to call each of the belonging ports along a service loop in each port on weekly basis (Chen and Yahalom, 2013). This gives similar operations among shipping lines regardless to the company size.…”
